"Each superfluous line, each wrongly placed line, any color applied without veneration or care, can spoil everything—that is, the spiritual."
— Theo Van Doesburg

This inquiry draws inspiration from Vietnamese painter Bui Xuan Phai (1920–1988) and his abstract paintings of Hanoi’s streets, painted from memory. The color compositions in his work are marked by bold frames that convey inner depth. Similarly, the towers are enclosed within these abstract frames, projecting different narratives of the people who live inside.

Located in the central area of Ho Chi Minh City, the site is part of a rapidly growing community along Bui Vien Street. The fluid form of the podium contrasts with the geometric façade, interacting with a streetscape currently filled with shophouses and small businesses. In Phai’s paintings, the curvature of the streets takes on a distinct shape, following the natural flow and activity of the urban environment.

Drawings

“For me, drawing has always been the most fundamental way of engaging the world, I’m convinced that it is only through drawing that I actually look at things, carefully. The act of drawing makes me conscious of what I’m looking at. If I wasn’t drawing I sense that I would not be seeing.” -Milton Glaser
