"Utopia is the unavoidable proposition of architecture. Every building encodes an image of the better world, the way things ought to be."
— Michael Sorkin

As we explore utopian worlds like Disneyland, how do we avoid “an apparatus that keeps every urban problem out of sight?” Organic community development in these theme parks presents a challenge that architects must address.

Puy du Fou, originating in France’s Vendée region in 1970, is known for its grand-scale shows featuring numerous actors, trained animals, and stunning special effects, vividly reenacting historical events. With its expansion into China, the task involved analyzing the site and crafting unscripted, spontaneous experiences while celebrating Chinese culture and heritage. The venture aimed to minimize artificial landscapes as much as possible by utilizing the existing topography, potentially incorporating performances, architectural settings, and themed environments that reflect significant moments from China’s history.

Drawings

“For me, drawing has always been the most fundamental way of engaging the world, I’m convinced that it is only through drawing that I actually look at things, carefully. The act of drawing makes me conscious of what I’m looking at. If I wasn’t drawing I sense that I would not be seeing.” -Milton Glaser
