"Crime is not just a function of the individual or his motives, but a function of his environment, and we can change that environment."
— Oscar Newman

The Bronzeville Dream Center (BDC) strives to align with Bright Star Community Outreach’s vision of empowering an underprivileged section of Chicago, transforming it into a self-sustaining, habitable community for individuals, families, and groups. In 2016, Chicago experienced 3,550 shootings and 762 murders.

Positioned in Bronzeville, the BDC aims to repurpose existing structures to establish a hub that cultivates community and promotes progress. The project envisions the development of an urban center for community services. Drawing inspiration from NATAL in Israel, the BDC is committed to providing counseling and diverse social services in Chicago. Its primary goal is to reduce factors contributing to violence while bolstering positive influences that nurture community spirit. The BDC places emphasis on four fundamental services: counseling, mentorship, parenting support, and workforce development.

“For me, drawing has always been the most fundamental way of engaging the world, I’m convinced that it is only through drawing that I actually look at things, carefully. The act of drawing makes me conscious of what I’m looking at. If I wasn’t drawing I sense that I would not be seeing.” -Milton Glaser
